Lisbon—St Lawrence County's First Town Focus of SLCHA Meeting
Lisbon encompassed all of the land that became St Lawrence County when the town was created in 1801. At that time the Town of Lisbon was part of Clinton County, and the county of St Lawrence was not created until the following year, 1802. Lisbon's history is the focus of the St Lawrence County Historical Association's 65th Annual Meeting at the Lisbon Wesleyan Church Fellowship Hall, 48 Church Street, Lisbon on Saturday, November 3rd from 11 am–2 pm. The public is invited and you do not have to be a member of the SLCHA to attend.
The St Lawrence County Historical Association's 65th Annual Meeting on Saturday, November 3rd begins at 11 am with a very, very, very short business meeting, followed at noon by a delicious buffet lunch. Lunch is $11 per person and includes turkey, ham, cheese, fresh Kaiser rolls, egg salad, chili, three styles of soup (clam chowder, corn chowder and vegetable beef barley), beverage, and delicious pie for dessert. Pre-registration is required for lunch (you do not need to order lunch to attend the meeting or tour). Lunch registrations can be made by calling 315-386-8133 or email.
The Lisbon Depot Museum is housed in the old Rutland Railroad Station in Lisbon and preserves the town's agricultural, railroad, and social history. The depot was built in 1930, and was the second reconstruction of a railway depot at Lisbon by the Rutland Railway. The railroad closed the depot in 1961 and it now houses the Town of Lisbon's museum. The 1 pm tour of the Lisbon Depot Museum will be conducted by Lisbon Town Historian Nancy LaFaver.
The SLCHA Gift Shop is a great way to learn about the Civil War during the 150th commemoration of this conflagration. Books include New York's North Country and the Civil War, Young Heroes of the Civil War, and Isaac Johnson: From Slave to Stonecutter. SLCHA members receive a 10% discount on these books and most other items in the gift shop.
