childhood in the late 19th century
Several Frederic Remington Arts Festival events are planned Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at the St. Lawrence County Historical Association's Silas Wright Museum, 3 E. Main St., Canton.
Local authors Anne Mazzotta and Pat Carson will present "Remember When: Childhood in the late 19th Century,"at 2 pm Sept. 29. The slide show and talk will offer a first glimpse at some of the historical photos of children and families in St. Lawrence County, taken from their book, St. Lawrence County Portraits, which will be released in mid-October.
Numerous county residents loaned family photos for the book; SLCHA volunteer David Martin scanned the photos, and SLCHA volunteers Mazzotta and Carson wrote captions and organized the material into book form. The book is part of the Images of America series published by Arcadia. Order forms will be available in the SLCHA gift shop.
From 5 to 7 pm Sept. 30, SLCHA will welcome the community to an open house for its new exhibit, "North Country Childhood: Growing up in Remington's Time." At 6 pm, Mazzotta and Carson will reprise their "Remember When" presentation. Also on display will be the "Holiday Stitching"exhibit.
The Silas Wright Museum will extend its open hours on Oct. 1. Visitors are welcome to view the "North Country Childhood" exhibit and tour the museum from 10 am to 4 pm
Weather permitting, children may dress up in period clothes and play old-time games from 10 am to 1 pm on the Silas Wright House front lawn (rain location, Calvary Baptist Church).
