Auction of donated quilts August 27
Kip Blanchard of Blanchard’s Auction Service, Potsdam, will donate his services for an auction of donated quilts, coverlets, and textiles at 7 pm Thursday, August 27. Buyers can view the quilts at 6 pm in the County Gallery. Light refreshments will be available in the dining room of the Silas Wright House.
The SLCHA is still accepting auction donations. Donors will receive 80 percent of the proceeds of the sale; 20 percent will go to the Historical Association. For more information, call 315-386-8133 or e-mail info@slcha.org
Quilt show ends August 29
The auction is the final special event of the "Fiber Arts and Photo Quilt Show" that opened in May at the SLCHA. Saturday, August 29 is the last day to view the show, which features 75 contemporary, antique, historical, traditional, and interpretive quilts.
Since the show opened, visitors from Alaska to North Carolina, Arizona to Maine, and Florida to Utah – 26 states in all, several foreign countries and several Canadian provinces – have viewed the quilts.
Preview of 2010 raffle quilt
Quilters Quorum members will demonstrate hand-quilting techniques with "The Ladies Quilt the Blues," the 2010 SLCHA raffle quilt, at 1 pm Wednesday, August 19, in the County Gallery at SLCHA. Quilters and others interested are welcome to attend.
Shades of blue predominate in the 92" x 116" queen-sized quilt. Tickets will be available for the first time on the 19th. The quilt drawing will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2010, at the SLCHA’s 20th annual Antique and Artisan Show and Sale.
Special Summer Programs Highlight Quilt Exhibit
Several special programs and an auction of donated quilts will highlight the fiber arts and photo show now open at the St Lawrence County Historical Association, 3 East Main Street, Canton. More than 75 antique, new, and interpretive quilts based on photographs of Jane Lammers of Canton, are on display throughout the historic Silas Wright House till August 29.

Visitors are welcome to view the quilts, tour the museum, do research in the archives, and visit the gift shop; hours are noon to 4 pm Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 8 pm on Friday. Parking is available in back, beside the main entrance. For more information, call 315-386-8133, or e-mail us

Special quilt-related programs at the SLCHA this summer are as follows:
- Friday, May 29th at 2 pm, Joe Laurenza, Director of the Gouverneur Museum, will talk about the history of the Underground Railroad in St. Lawrence County.
- Wednesday, June 10th, 1-3 pm, the newly formed Museum Quilters will demonstrate techniques involved in hand quilting (with and without a hoop); hand piecing, appliqué, miniature quilts, felted wool, white-on-white, and marking a quilt.
- Thursday, June 25, 1-3 pm, the Museum Quilters invite all those interested to watch as they lay out the quilt top, batting, and backing, and baste the layers together in preparation for the actual quilting.
- Thursday, July 9th at noon, expert quilter Rebecca Muir MacKellar of Canton will talk about "The Evolution of an Art Quilt".
- Wednesday, July 22nd at 10 am, expert quilter Sharon Fields of Lisbon will talk about the various techniques she used in creating her unique quilted jacket.
- Thursday, August 27th, in the evening, auctioneer Kip Blanchard of Potsdam will conduct an auction of antique quilts and coverlets with a percentage of the proceeds to benefit the Historical Association. Let us know if you are interested in donating an item to be auctioned.
